Born on 10 February 1895, the son of Austin Godfrey and Laura Amelia (White) Richardson of Prospect Road Newtown Geelong.
Enlisting on 19 July 1916, he embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916.
Roy served in France where he suffered to effects of a gas attack, as reported in the Geelong Advertiser of 21 October 1918.
He returned to Australia embarking on 16 January 1919.
