Robert was the son of Robert Patrick and Bridget Agnes Duffey; husband of Elsie May Duffey, of Major's Creek, New South Wales. He had been born in Launceston, Tasmania. He is commemorated in St Stephen's Anglican Church, Major's Creek, New South Wales. Roll of Intercession in the church reads: 'The Prayers of Parishioners are asked for the following Soldiers who are serving their God, King, and Country in the World War against Germany's Aggression, Tyranny, and Frightfulness.'

His brother, 4912 Pte Herbert William Duffy, 12th Battalion died of wounds on 22 November 1916.
