Biography contributed by Robert Kearney

Raid on Celtic Wood

Private Davies like so many other men known to have taken part in the raid on 9 October was recorded on the 13 October Field Return as wounded on 8 October. On 9 October, he was treated at 64th Field Ambulance with ‘GSW’ to his left thigh but when  transported to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station the same day, was admitted with ‘GSW’ to left arm as well as to his left thigh. When admitted to 59th General Hospital on 14 October he was admitted with ‘GSW’ to his left arm and left knee, and died there on 1 November; he was laid to rest the following day.

In a letter dated 17 April 1918 to Sarah Smith a cousin of Davies, the OIC Base Records wrote, ‘... I am now in receipt of advice that shows he died at 59th General Hospital, St. Omer, France, on 1st November 1917, of wounds (gunshot wound knee amputation) received in action ...’[i]

Based on the Field Return recording him as wounded 8 October yet not being admitted to a medical facility until 9 October there is a high probability he was wounded on the raid.
