Allan Johnson, son of Mrs Ellen Johnson, was born in Hermitage, South Australia but then later moved to Houghton where he grew up. Allan, was a gardener in Houghton. On the 16th of May 1916 he decided to enlist for the Australian army to go fight for his country.

On the 12th of September Allan embarked from Adelaide on HMAT A73 Commonwealth. Allan was part of the 50th Infantry Battalion. Infantry are soldiers trained to fight on ground and on the front lines of battles, in close proximity to the enemy.

Allan was wounded on 13th Januray 1917 and after receiving treatment in hospital was returned to his Battalion on the 12th March

The 50th Battalion fought in the fields of Noreuil. Private Allan John Johnson was tragically killed-in-action on 2nd April 1917.

Allan John Johnson has a memorial in the Noreuil War Cemetery to commemorate his war efforts, however, the actual location of his body is not known. In this cemetery 220 fellow soldiers were buried or had received memorium tombstones. His war efforts were also greatly remembered in Houghton and Adelaide. His name is included on the Houghton War Memorial and the Adelaide National War Memorial. These were to respect his courage and his sacrifice to help others and his country.
