Murray left Australia on 11 January 1916 and went to France with the 50th Battalion. He was wounded in action at Boulogne on 14 August sustaining a shot to the left foot. Murray was transferred to the 2nd Northern General Hospital at Leeds, England for treatment. After attending courses at the School of Cookery at Tidworth in June and July 1917, he rejoined his unit in France on 24 October attached to the 13th Infantry Brigade. Murray served out the duration of the war in France, returning to Australia on the Armagh on 5 April 1919 and was discharged on 8 July.
