Son of William James Barrett Uphill and Margaret Uphill nee Livingstone of Mount Schanck, SA. Brother of Stanley Livingstone Uphill who returned to Australia on 18 August 1919 having served with the 32nd Battalion

24 April 1917 - enlisted at Mount Gambier with the 9th Light Horse Regiment and with the rank of Private

Commenced return to Australia on 10 July 1919 aboard HT Oxfordshire disembarking on 10 August 1919

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

26 August 1919 - discharged at the 4th Military District
