James Harold Hunter was the son of Edward and Ellen Hunter of Carrick, Tasmania. Wounded on 5 April 1918, multiple shrapnel wounds, he died in an Australian General Hospital in the town of Rouen. His brother 1645 Pte. William Robert Hunter 26th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Bullecourt in May 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

“Canon Wilmer of Carrick conveyed the sad intelligence to Mrs. Edward Hunter of the death of her son, Sapper James Harold Hunter, through gunshot wounds in chest and arms on April 1st at the lst Australian General Hospital. He was the second son to make the supreme sacrifice.”
