William left Melbourne with the 13th Light Horse C Squadron on board HMAS Themistocles on 28 May 1915. His medical record states, “About 10 June 1915 on Transport A 43{Persic} 10 days out was kicked by a horse on left thigh, fell on right knee.” William was admitted to No.1 Australian General Hospital with influenza and rheumatism from the displaced cartilage of his right knee. After leaving hospital on 1 August he left Suez for Australia on HMAS Themistocles on 15 August and was discharged as “medically unfit for duty” due to his knee injury.
