Leonard joined the 10th Battalion on 28 February 1916 after initially enlisting with the 8th Reinforcement / 27th Battalion and served in Egypt until mid-1916. He was sent to France with the 10th on 3 July. In December Leonard was hospitalised at Etaples with scabies, rejoining his unit on 18 January 1917. In September he was serving with 1st Division Traffic Control. Leonard continued serving in France for the duration of the war. Scabies struck again in March 1919 making it necessary for him to be sent to Bulford Hospital in England for treatment on 17 June. Leonard returned to Australia from England on board the Takada on 18 July and was discharged on 21 October.
