Hermann and his unit, the 10th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement, embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A24 Benalla on 27 October 1915, bound for Egypt. He transferred to the 50th Battalion on 26 February 1916. After a few months serving at Tel-el-Kebir he was sent to France with his unit, where he continued to serve for the duration of the war. On 12 January 1919 Hermann was transferred to England to return to Australia on the Warwickshire on 5 April. He disembarked on 24 May and was discharged on 13 July.
