From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
54 years ago today, on the 3rd August 1968, Lance Corporal James Michael Coleman, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1092), railway porter from 32 Elizabeth Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. CATHOLIC 3-93. 74.
Born at Armidale, New South Wales on the 10th December 1886 to John Michael and Margaret Coleman of Phoebe Street, Islington, N.S.W.; husband of Mary Coleman nee O'Hea (married 10.7.1915, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1969, sleeping here), James enlisted November 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 16.2.1917 (otitis media - middle ear infection), 23.7.1917 (enteritis), 27.7.1917 (colitis), 17.4.1918 (not stated).
James was invalided home May 1919, being discharged on the 1st July 1919.
Mr. Coleman’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll. Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.
Many thanks to Mr. Coleman's great nephew Bruce Oakes for the notification and family history.
I visited the gravesite to find a small wooden cross erected by owners with a plaque, date unknown, so I replaced the cross and erected another cross March 2016 at the gravesite in remembrance of James’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Younger Brother Cyril Francis (34th Battalion, Reg No-2287, born 1895, died 9.3.1959, age 61) also resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 1-22. 90.
I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to James.
