Robert Edwin Were was born in Bristol England and then moved to South Australia and made a family of 6 with his wife Sarah Maria Were. He was the father of Ruby Maria Were, Elizabeth Ellen Were, Elsie May Were, Alice Myrtle Were, and stepfather to Rachel Eileen Watson. Living on Pulsford road, Prospect, South Australia, he made a living being a 'horse driver'. Robert Edwin Were was 5 feet and 2 inches tall, weighted 121ibs, had a fresh complexion, green eyes, and dark brown hair.
In 1916, on the 17th of February Edwin enlisted into the A.I.F. at 40 years old. Edwin was first appointed to the 43rd battalion H.Q unit with the regimental number 755 and was transferred private on the 7th of March 1916. On the 27th of June 1916, Robert Edwin Were embarked on board HMAT A57 'Malakuta' to England from Adelaide, south Australia. Disembarking on the 24th of October and then proceeding on the 11th of November on the S.S. ‘Golden Eagle’ Folkestone to reinforce the 32nd battalion in France. Robert Edwin Were then disembarked on the 25th of November 1916 with his new regimental number, 3346.
On the 3rd of January 1917, Robert Edwin Were became sick in the field and was taken to St. Andrews hospital, London. 10 days later he was then admitted the Wandsworth 3rd London hospital for debility. Then on the 10th of February he was transferred from Wandsworth 3rd London hospital to 1st Aux hospital for debility. He was then discharged from the 1st Aux hospital on the 9th of March and found himself marching into No.2 Com.Deport Weymouth on the same day. 5 days later, Robert Edwin Were marched out to No.3 Com.Deport Hurdcott from No.2 Com.Deport Weymouth. Then on the 17th of March, Robert marched into No.3 Com.Deport until the 5th of May where he marched out to No.2 Com.Deport and arrived there that same day.
He returned to Australia on the 8th of September 1917 and was discharged on the 8th of November because of age and debility (medically unfit). When Robert Edwin Were returned, he was rewarded with two medals for his service, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. Robert Edwin Were died after discharge in Adelaide on the 24th of January 1948 at 72 years old.
