William Isaac Woodbridge was one of three sons of Benjamin and Mary Ann Woodbridge, of Grenfell, New South Wales, who all enlisted in the 15th Battalion AIF and served overseas. By the time World War One was declared the family had relocated to Orange. ‘Bill’ Woodbridge was working as a boundary rider in northern Queensland, and his older brothers, John and Patrick, were working as shearers in the same area. They all ended up embarking on the same ship.
Bill landed at Gallipoli, along with his two brothers on 9 July 1915. On 6 August 1915 the 15th Battalion was part of an attack on Hill 971, the highest point of the Sari Bair Ridge at Gallipoli. The attack was a failure due to the difficult terrain and was costly in casualties. Bill’s brother Jack Woodbridge was reported wounded and missing. Bill and his brother Patrick were both wounded in action a few weeks later on 25 August 1915.
Bill’s brother Jack’s fate was never discovered and he remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial as 2007 Pte. John Michael Paul Woodbridge 15th Battalion AIF, killed in action 8 August 1915, aged 24.
Bill proceeded to France in June 1916. On 6 August he suffered multiple gunshot wounds, to the buttocks, arms and thigh. Although passed through several dressing stations he did not survive his wounds; he died a week later in a Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
