Clement was initially rejected as a recruit by the A.I.F. due to being only 5ft 2ins, but was successful in 1917 and embarked the A29 Suevic on 21 June, arriving at Liverpool, England on 26 August. He was sent to France with the 2nd Signal Company on 14 December 1917, where he served out the remainder of the war. Clement returned to Australia from England on the Mahia on 4 June and was discharged on 17 August.
