Biography contributed by Glenunga International High School

Jack Rieken, was a young man who decided to take the choice of joining the army during World War I to serve his country. Born and raised in Queenstown, South Australia, Jack worked as a Steward prior to the war. Jack was single and enlisted in the army at age 20 on the 21st of August 1914 at Morphettville. After enlistment he embarked from Adelaide on the H.M.A.T. A.II “Ascanius” on the 20th of October 1914. From there on Jack became a part of the 10th Battalion.

Jack's role in the 10th Battalion was private. He was wounded in the first days of the Gallipoli landing and was hospitalised in Egypt. He returned to duty on the peninsula on 30 July. While srving on the Western Front, Jack was repeatedly ill and spent much time in hospital. As one of the first enlisted in 1914, he was marked for early return to Australia and embarked from England on 21 September 1918. On 31 January 1919 he was discharged from service in Australia.
