Sydney Chamberlain
Upon enlisting, Sydney did his basic training with Base Light Horse, 50th Battalion, 7th reinforcement at Mitcham, until his unit embarked at Adelaide on A19 Afric on 7 November and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917. Sydney spent the majority of 1917 stationed at Codford. On 12 February, he failed to obey a call out, for which he was docked 2 days' pay. He undertook further training with the 13th training Battalion at Codford, prior to his unit being sent to France via Southampton on 16 January 1918.
He was transferred to the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion on 31 January. In August, Sydney was admitted to hospital at Rouen, France for 2 days' treatment for diarrhea and dysentery. Chillblains, a common complaint from the appalling conditions in the trenches, led to Sydney receiving treatment at the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station on 13 December.
With the 50th Battalion, he left France for Australia on 13 April 1919, but had to be hospitalised at Hurdcott, due to a severe bout of influenza, thereby delaying his return. Sydney embarked the Euripides on 7 September, disembarking in Adelaide on 18 October. He was discharged on 4 December.
Sydney was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
