An Original Anzac awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

105 years ago today, at 1.40 P.M. on the 9th October 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Gordon Cyril Holt, 1st Battalion (Reg No-300), labourer (millhand on mineral separation works), from Wrightville, Cobar, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at the 10th Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium, Broodseinde Ridge, Battle of Poelcappelle, Passchendaele Campaign, age 22.

Born at Wilcannia, New South Wales on the 30th December 1894 to Charles (died?) and Ada Holt died 20.11.1932, Hamilton, N.S.W. of 73 and "Gordonville", 29 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales and 77 Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W. Ada remarried as HAMILTON, date unknown, sleeping here, Gordon enlisted August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 9.8.1915 (diarrhoea).

Wounded in action - 23.7.1916 (buttock, GSW fingers, left hand, mild), 4.5.1917 (2nd Battle of Bullecourt, France, GSW neck, left ear, severe), 9.10.1917 (shrapnel got him underneath his steel helmet, shrapnel wounds on face, head, fractured skull).

I have only located Mr. Holt’s name inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Gordon’s mother Ada is sleeping in an unmarked grave, so at 1.40 P.M. on the 9th October 2017 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of her son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 2-35. 6.

Older brother Robert Russell (Bob, 35th Battalion, Reg No-1473, born 1893, Wilcannia N.S.W., of Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W. and 64 Canarys Road, Lakemba, N.S.W., applied for Gallipoli Medallion for brother, 1.8.1967, died 1971, Burwood, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.
