John transferred to the 53rd Battalion when he reached Egypt in early 1916. He served for almost three years, being wounded by shrapnel in the left arm on 1 September 1918. He was evacuated to England and returned to Australia during early 1919.

He lost two brothers during the war, 3215 Pte. Ernest William Mason 56th Battalion AIF, was killed in action in Belgium 23 September 1917, aged 31 and 3411 Pte. Clarence Russell Mason 13th Battalion AIF died as a prisoner of war in Germany on 30 October 1918, aged 22, 12 days before the Armistice.

His father also passed away in Mudgee during June 1917, when his three sons were away on active service.
