The Henderson Brothers

Hugh Grahame Henderson enlisted in the AIF on 13 July 1917 and joined the 8th Reinforcements of the 35th Battalion. His enlistment papers showed that he was 18 years old on enlistment and that his parents had to sign his documents giving their approval to join the AIF. He sailed from Australia on 2 August that year and arrived in England sick and was put in hospital. He was discharged from hospital on 1 November and went to a training Battalion in the UK. He completed his training in early February and proceeded overseas to France where he joined the 35th Battalion on 16 February. On the 4th of April the 35th Battalion was involved in a counter attack at Hangard Wood (SE of VBx) as part of operations to stop the German army advancing on Villers-Bretonneux and Amiens. Private Hugh Henderson was wounded in action and died of those wounds the same day. He was 19 days short of this 19th birthday when he died. After the War he was reburied at the Adelaide Cemetery alongside his older brother, Lieutenant Ronald Henderson, who died 5 days after he did.
The National Archives of Australia holds the service records for the Henderson brothers. Other than the usual documents it contains letters from and two their father regarding their burial place. Their father asked for, and received, 6 copies of a photo of the two graves where his sons lie forever in a foreign field.
