A 'Digger' in all respects!!
A great thing about trying to find out about Australian casualties is that the service records are available on line which always makes interesting reading.
Pete and Sandra Beckett have been trekking around the outback of Australia photographing cemeteries for the project, that have not been visited already. Last night they sent in St George Cemetery in Queensland with an interesting family headstone for Private William James Nevin as well as his formal plaque erected by OoAWG.
The family headstone indicates that he died whilst lost in the bush and his remains were laid to rest on June 9th 1919. The headstone had been erected by his 'sorrowing' mother.
By accessing his service records I was hoping to determine the time between being 'lost' and his remains being found. However, the only referral to his death was from the 'Office of works' which stated 'Date of death not available at this office'
One wonders show a 'stockman' by trade could have got lost?
Reading through the rest of this characters service record I could not help but having a wry smile on my face!
'Absence without leave, Improperly dressed, Absent from Parade,Using obscene and threatening language to an NCO, Disobeying orders' were just some of his charges resulting in Field punishment
Mumps and Gonorrhoea were just two of his ailments!
Good on ya mate!
