Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Alexander Cameron was born at Kongbool Station near Balmoral in Victoria. He worked on a farm near Coleraine when he enlisted. He was wounded near Flers during November 1916 and evacuated to England for recovery.

He had not long been back with his unit when on the 10 February 1917, the 5th Battalion conducted a raid on the German trenches near Bazentin. The 6th Battalion, who were beside them in the front line, were subsequently heavily bombarded in retaliation. Three men of the 6th Battalion died in the shellfire, one of whom was Cameron, and all three were buried in the Bazentin-Le-Petit Military Cemetery.

His younger brother, 3059 Pte. Gordon Kenneth Cameron 5th Battalion AIF, was killed in action only six weeks later, on 2 April 1917, aged 25.

They were the sons of William and Annie Cameron, of Coleraine, Victoria.
