Next of kin was given as his brother Daniel Matheson who was last heard of in 1907 when Daniel was residing in Auckland, New Zealand.

6 May 1916 - A gentleman by this name was later located in Auckland, New Zealand but denied that he was a brother of Neil.

A sister, Mary Matheson  was later found to be living at Lsmmer View House, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland
