Only son of Mrs. John Thomson of Aberdeen. John was born in Edinburgh in 1882 and arrived in Australia in 1908. He entered the service of The Sydney Morning Herald two years later, being engaged in the lynotype department.
Enlisting in August 1915, he was sent with reinforcements to Rabaul, where he remained till June, 1916. In December of that year he left for France with the 1st Machine Gun Company, and saw much fighting, taking part in the operations at bullecourt, Passchendaele and Strezeele. He was actively engaged during the German offensive of 1918, and the subsequent Allied advance, remaining on service till practically the end. He returned to Australia in May 1919.
