Julius Wilhelm Beinke, son of Adolph Beinke, was born in Walloway, South Australia on the 26th of March, 1894. He attended the Walloway School. His friends called him Will.
On school holidays Julius would do seasonal work around the district, as well as working with his father. He was particularly involved in wheat lumping, a job he was very good at. He was a very strong young man who found it very easy to lift and stack heavy, four bushel bags of wheat. He could throw bags of wheat around like they were bags of chaff. He also was very keen on athletics but didn’t get to do much towards that before he left for war to serve his country.
On the 30th of March, 1916, at twenty-two he joined the army, and stated he would stay for the war plus four months extra. When he joined he was 5 feet 9 ½ inches tall, weighed 168 pounds, had blue eyes and dark hair.
Before Julius joined the army he was single, had never been convicted and had never enrolled in the army before.
He was sent straight to France after all the forms were submitted. He was assigned to the 15th reinforcements of the 27th Battalion and his regimental number was 5556.
He served one year in France before he was killed in service on the 27th of June 1917. He was taken to the third casualty clearing station, France, where he died from many wounds he received fighting in the war. He died in Messines on the 27th June, the night the battalion relieved the 25th. He became part of the B Battalion in trenches 141 and 142 and the enemy bombarded the front line trenches.
He was buried in the Military Cemetery.Grevilliers.
On the 24th of March, 1923, Julius was awarded the Star medal, British war medal and the Victory medal for his service in the war.
