Biography

Raymond was actually Joseph Raymond, and enlisted on 4th February 1915, aged 34 years and 10 months, joining the 22nd battalion. He was born in St Kilda, but noted on his form as Paramatta, NSW, where he lived as a child, obviously mistaken. He arrived in Gallipoli in September 1915, 5 months after the first landing on 25th April. In October he was aboard the hospital ship "Grampian" and transferred to Malta, sufferering dysentry, then malaria. . The 22nd Battallion left Turkey for Egypt in December, then moved on to France in March 1913. In January 1916 he was aboard the hospital ship "Valdivia". He rejoined his unit, sent from Alexandria, Egypt, to Marcelles, France, arriving on 26-3-1916. He caused a few problems being AWOL from Parade 3-4-16, penalty 144hr pay docked, France. Breaking ranks while marching, penalty 20days pay docked, France.

Embarked on Hospital Ship "St David" at Boulogne for England in September 1916. Transferred to 65th Battalion 23-3-17. Transferred to 17th Brigade Windmill Hill, 25-4-17.Transferred to the 66th Battalion Windmill Hill, 28-4-17. Returned for Australia on 21-7-17. Discharged 25-10-17.

His brother 5588 Pte. Ernest Arthur Egan (/explore/people/99919) died in France 20-3-1917, on the western front.
