Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Thomas John CHARNOCK, (Service Number 3257) was born on 22 September 1893 at Parkes. He commenced working with the NSW Railways as a casual locomotive cleaner at Lismore Locomotive Depot in July 1914, becoming permanent in September. In August 1915 he joined the Expeditionary Force. On his Attestation Papers, lodged in Brisbane since that recruiting centre was much closer to Lismore than Sydney, he upgraded his calling to be ‘Fireman, N.S.Wales Railways’.
He left Australia though Brisbane on HMAT ‘Seang Bee’ on 21 October 1915. He contracted malaria on the journey to Europe and was admitted to hospital in Heliopolis in February 1916, before joining the 15th Australian Infantry Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir in March.

Thomas John CHARNOCK, (Service Number 3257) was born on 22nd September 1893 at Parkes. He commenced working with the NSW Railways as a casual locomotive cleaner at Lismore Locomotive Depot in July 1914, He became permanent in September. In August 1915 he joined the Expeditionary Force. On his Attestation Papers, which were lodged in Brisbane because that recruiting centre was much closer to Lismore than Sydney, he stated his occupation as ‘Fireman, N.S.Wales Railways’.
He left Australia from Brisbane on HMAT ‘Seang Bee’ on 21st October 1915. He contracted malaria on the journey to Europe and was admitted to hospital in Heliopolis (Egypt) in February 1916. He joined the 15th Australian Infantry Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir in March. In April he was promoted to Corporal and in May to Lance-Sergeant.
On 1st June 1916 he went to join the British Expeditionary Force from Alexandria. He disembarked in Marseilles on 8th June. On 21st July he was severely reprimanded for the crime of being absent from Tattoo. He was killed in action on 27th August 1916.
Since he has no known grave his name is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Picardie, France.
