William Francis EVANS (Service Number 4769) was born at Mascot in 1893. He joined the NSWGR Traffic Branch as a telephone boy in 1909, rising to junior porter in 1910 and apprentice clerk six months later. In 1911 he was promoted to junior clerk in the Sydney Parcels Office, and two months later moved to the office of the Superintendent of Lines. There he attained proficiency in shorthand and in September 1914 was promoted to 7th class clerk. A year later, in September 1915, he was granted leave to enlist in the AIF. Less than a year after that, he was dead, aged 22.

He had enlisted at Warwick Farm, and was embarked from Sydney in March 1916, proceeding via Egypt to France, where he landed in June 1916.

On 19 July he was reported missing in action, and a Court of Enquiry later determined that he had been killed in action on that date. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles.
