Eric left Adelaide on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 28 August 1916. On 30 December he was sent to France where he was appointed Lance Corporal on 20 May 1917.
While in action in France on 8 October, Eric was wounded in the left leg and after treatment was able to rejoin the 10th Battalion on 17 February 1918. He was wounded in action again on 23 August sustaining a shrapnel wound to the left thigh. For his conduct in this action he was awarded the Military medal on 21 October. Eric was invalided to the U.K. where he was admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital at Brighton. From there he was returned to Australia on board Ceramic on 25 January 1919. His mother was informed of Eric’s wounding on 17 March. Lance Corporal E.M. Edwards was discharged on 21 April.
