George 'Dody' was the son of George & Mary Wright of Suva, Fiji.
He joined the Fiji Civil Service as a Clerk with the Customs Dept. in 1913. When war broke out he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces in Nov. 1914 (2nd Light Horse Brigade) with his two younger brothers, Edgar (6th Light Horse Brigade - killed in Action at Romani) and Maity (6th Light Horse Regiment). They were all excellent horsemen as they were born and grew up in the rural hills of Fort Carnarvon, Ba where his father was stationed as a District Commissioner with the Colonial Govt.
His military duties were cut short due to injuries by shrapnel at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli and a gunshot resulting in a shattered left foot.
Dody returned to the Colony and was appointed Junior Sub-Inspector of Constabulary. He became the Acting District Inspector at Levuka, Ba, Labasa, Rewa and Lautoka. In 1923 he acted as District Inspector at Suva and Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch until his retirement on health grounds in 1938.
He had two other younger brothers Rob and Oscar. Rob became a well known photographer for the Public Relations Office, Fiji Govt. Oscar became a master mariner and travelled extensively.
Dody married Cecelia and had a daughter Mary and grandaughter Frances (dcd 2024).
He died of a heart attack on 23 March 1942 whilst mowing the lawn at his home on the waterfront in Suva.
He is buried at the Old Suva Cemetery.
