John William Neyland served during the Boer War with the Victorian Imperial Bushmen. He enlisted again in WW1 during 1915 at the age of 38. He joined the 1st Remount Unit which was formed to look after the Light Horse Regiment’s horses. The units contained a high proportion of Boer War veterans and expert horsemen.
John was the eldest of seven brothers, five in the AIF and two with the British Forces. One brother, James, was killed with the Gordon Highlanders during 1917 and another brother, Niven, was captured at Gallipoli during August 1915 and spent three years as a prisoner of war in a Turkish prison camp. They were all the sons of John Pringle and Margaret Ann Neyland of Birchip, Victoria.
John Neyland suffered badly with cellulitis in Egypt and was returned to Australia during late 1916.
