Selby Joseph Ferney JOYCE was born in Waterloo, Sydney in 1892

His parents were Joseph Vincent JOYCE and Alice Mary Bridget Christina FERNEY - the family moved to Western Australia where Alice died in 1895.  His father Joseph remarried to a Cecelia Day O'BRIEN in 1896 -Cecelia died in 1927 in Western Australia

He enlisted in Casula, NSW on 7th December, 1915 with the 5th Infantry Battalion as a Private and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 28th July, 1916 - he transferred to the 38th Infantry Battalion on 30th September, 1916

Selby died of Wounds on the 24th December, 1916 at the 10th Australian Field Ambulance Station in France and is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery - his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial

He was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal

His brother Claude/Clyde Henry JOYCE (SN3776) also served in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade in WW1 & returned to Australia

His half brother Leslie Mervyn Vincent JOYCE (SN7987) served in WW1 in the 16th Infantry Battalion and also in WW2  (SN W243453) in the 10th Garrison Battalion

Another half brother Eric Albert Beddingfield JOYCE (SN W71789) served in WW2 and another half brother Roy Stanley Norman JOYCE (WX5006) served in WW2
