Hood G – Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board
I think G Hood was George Arthur Hood, born 1892 at Tower Hamlets, London also recorded as GH Hood on the South Burnett Anzac Heros website.
George Arthur Hood arrived in Sydney in Jun 1914 on board the immigrant ship Makarini. He had been working as a farm hand when he applied to enrol in the Australian Army on 10 Feb 1915 but was discharged 4 days later at his own request.
By Jul 1916 George was living at Emerald, Qld when he again enlisted in the Australian Army and discharged 5 days later as legally UNFIT. Occupation = Labourer.
A few months later George Hood married Margaret Fernleigh and they were living in Bundaberg per a couple of articles in The Bundaberg Mail and Burnett Advertiser. Then 2 years later on 15 Apr 1918 George again enlisted in the Australian Army and this time was accepted. Regimental number – 57999. He gave his wife as NOK, address unknown.
G.A. Hood was one of the soldiers photographed in The Queenslander Pictorial, supplement to The Queenslander, 1918. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 17 July 1918.
George Hood’s records show that he was assigned to several battalions including Queensland Reinforcement 5 and 9th Battalion. It is not clear if he served in France at all.
George returned to Australia on 16 July 1919. It seems he led a troubled life and was in court a few times before finally settling in the Maroochydore area and trading as a fisherman. He moved from Maroochydore to Bundaberg in 1958 where he died in November of same year. George is buried at Bundaberg General Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
As George was an itinerant labourer during the war years he was probably working at Wooroolin district when he enlisted in the army in 1918 and therefore recorded on the Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board.
