Died on this date – 16th June…… James Archibald Fooks was born at Normandy Hill, Brisbane, Queensland on 5th September, 1894.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 9th October, 1915 in Brisbane, Queensland as a 21 year old, single, Carpenter.

Provisional Corporal Archibald James Fooks, Service number 9517, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Karoola (A63) on 7th March, 1916 with the First Australian General Hospital, 15th Reinforcements.
On 17th May, 1916 Prov. Cpl Fooks was marched out to Medical Stores at Heliopolis from Base Details at Tel-el-Kebir.

He embarked from Alexandria on 3rd August, 1916 on H. T. Tunisian. He disembarked in England on 18th August, 1916 & was taken on strength of A.M.C. (Army Medical Corps) Details on 18th August, 1916. Provisional Corporal Fooks was attached for duty to A.B.D.M.S. (Australian Base Depot of Medical Stores) Bhurtpore Barracks, Tidworth, Wiltshire, England on 18th August, 1916.

Lance Corporal Fooks was medically classified at Tidworth, Wiltshire, England on 27th March, 1917 as B1A.

On 5th May, 1917 L/Cpl Fooks was marched in to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, Dorset, England from Bhurtpore Barracks at Tidworth, Wiltshire.

A Medical Report was completed on Lance Corporal Archibald James Fooks on 9th May, 1917 at No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, Dorset, England. His disability was recorded as Synovitis of Left Knee which had originated at Tidworth in March, 1917. “3 years ago was kicked in the knee by a horse. Was in Egypt 5 months suffered a good deal then with knee. Has enlarged right testicle, soft & flabby in consistency.” Lance Corporal Fook’s disability was caused prior to enlistment but had been aggravated by Active Service conditions. The Officer in charge of the Case recommended that Lance Corporal Fooks be discharged as permanently unfit & returned to Australia. The Medical Board decided that Lance Corporal Fooks was permanently unfit for General & Home Service.

On 20th May, 1917 L/Cpl Fooks was marched out from No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, Dorset for embarkation to Australia.

He was to return to Australia on H.T. Ayrshire due to Medical Stress & for discharge due to synovitis Left Knee. He embarked from Plymouth, England on 23rd May, 1917.

Lance Corporal Archibald James Fooks died on 16th June, 1917 at Sea on board H.T. Ayrshire (A33) from Acute Tubercular Broncho-pneumonia. He was one of five soldiers to die on board H.T. Ayrshire on voyage to Australia – one died on 24th June, 1917 & three died on 6th July, 1917.

He was buried at Sea from H.T. Ayrshire (A33) on 16th June, 1917. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
