Sydney Albert Armstrong was born in February 1893 in Glenrowan to Sarah J ARMSTRONG and unknown Mr. ARMSTRONG, Victoria. (Could be a Charles Edward ARMSTRONG). Sarah is said to have died in East Brunswick in 1951.

His mother on his attestment is Sarah SPORTON of Queen St, Brunswick, Vic.

Sydney ARMSTRONG married Elsie May TRENORDER on 19 April 1920 at Registry Office in Adelaide, South Australia. They had one child during their marriage. Sydney John Clement ARMSTRONG who sadly died at 4 months.

Military service

Sydney ARMSTRONG joined the AIF at Keswick on 02 June1915 and given service no. 2108. He was allocated to the 13/27th Battalion.

He embarked for Egypt on 26 August 1915 and went on to see-active service at Gallipoli and France/Belgium. After the Gallipoli campaign, the 27th Battalion saw action throughout the Western Front including Pozieres, Flers, Menin Rd, Broodseinde Ridge, Villers-Bretonneux, Amiens and Mont St Quentin.

Sydney was listed as having suffered shell shock on 22 May 1916 and gas poisoning on 30 April1916.

He was discharged from the AIF, medically unfit, on 27 September 1918 as a result of the gassing.

Sydney died as a young father on 10 January 1922 at Gawler, South Australia, at the age of 28. His death certificate has him dying of tuberculosis.
