103 years ago today, on the 9th April 1918, Private William Henry Stewart (also known as Squirt), 54th Battalion, butcher or labourer from Teralba, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Villers-Bretonneux, France, age 23 years 8 months.

Born at Lismore, New South Wales about 1894 to Robert George (died 1938) and Mary Stewart (died 1934) nee Fulton of "Aubigny", Marmong Point, Teralba, N.S.W., William enlisted January 1916 with the 34th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 1.11.1916 (GSW back).
Invalided to UK - 11.11.1916.
Admitted to hospital 1.10.1917 (influenza), 8.12.1917 (sprained ankle), 25.2.1918 (gastritis).

William is resting at Aubigny British Cemetery, France. Row A Grave 13.

Mr Stewart’s name has been inscribed on the Teralba Soldiers' Memorial, Teralba Public School Roll of Honour (photos, unveiled on the 27th October 1917, 77 names now inscribed, 6 Fallen), West Wallsend Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle & Northern District Branch Meat Workers' Union Honour Roll.

William has been memorialised at his parent’s gravesite, and I have placed poppies in remembrance of his supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. CATHOLIC 2-34. 62.
