From Australian Remembrance Army
Lance Corporal Thomas Buchanan (Service No. 757), an Australian World War One veteran, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque or headstone recognising their service for Australia.
On 20 September 2025, his headstone was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 161 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Thomas Buchanan was born on 8 March 1892 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Thomas Buchanan and Mary Ann McGregor. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Longreach, Queensland, in December 1914, aged 22, giving his occupation as station hand and named his father, Thomas Buchanan, as next of kin. On 9 February 1915, he embarked for overseas service from Brisbane with the 5th Light Horse Regiment aboard HMAT Itria (A53).
While serving at Gallipoli in September 1915, he was admitted to hospital with dysentery, and the following month he was again hospitalised, this time with enteritis, and was transferred to Malta for treatment.
He spent the majority of his service in Egypt, and in October 1918 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and attended an instruction school two months later.
In July 1919 he returned to Australia on HMAT Prinz Ludwig, which arrived in Sydney in September 1919.
He was discharged from the AIF on 9 October 1919.
During WWI, his brother Charles McGregor Buchanan served with the 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), in Scotland. He was killed in action on 25 September 1915 and is commemorated at the Loos Memorial, France.
Lance Corporal Thomas Buchanan died on 2 December 1930, aged 38, and was buried the following day in Monumental Portion GP5 at Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. His death registration records his occupation as dairy farmer and his cause of death as disseminated sclerosis, pneumonia, and cardiac failure. He was a single man who never married and had no known children.
His funeral notice read: “The Friends of Mr. and Mrs. T. Buchanan and Miss M. Buchanan are invited to attend the Funeral of their deceased Son and Brother, Thomas Buchanan, late 5th Light Horse, A.I.F., to move from Alex. Gow's Funeral parlour, Queen St., Petrie Bight, This (Wednesday) Afternoon, at 2 o'clock, for the Lutwyche Cemetery.”
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice.
His identity has now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
