William LANG, (Service Number 5146) was born in Manly on 2nd March 1877.  A NSWGR employee card could not be found for him. He was employed by the Permanent Way Branch of the Railways. 

When he enlisted in the AIF at Thirroul in December 1915, he gave his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘Miner’.

He was allotted to the 16th Reinforcements of the 1st Battalion. He embarked at Sydney on 1st April 1916, changed ships in Egypt, landed in France in May, and joined his Battalion in June.  Sometime between 22nd and 25th July he was wounded in action (gunshot wound of face) and sent to hospital.  He was discharged from hospital early in August, he re-joined his unit on 26th August 1916. 

He was killed in action on 27th September 1916. he was buried in Bedford House New Cemetery, 1-mile S of Ypres. 

After the war the authorities were unable to trace his only known relative, whom he had given as his next of kin, an aunt in Melbourne.
