Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

Rev. James W. Dains, of Bowral, the original Methodist padre of the Ninth Brigade, attached to the 35th Battalion, who could not visit Newcastle for the commemoration march owing to continued ill health, sent the following message: 'What memories are stirred by the mention of the anniversary of the departure for the war of those great men, and what a privilege it was to serve them in any capacity. We shall remember with great pride the many fine men who made the supreme sacrifice, and those who still miss them and find the old sorrows reopened today. My
earnest prayer is that the world may be saved from another great calamity.'

THE LATE REV. J. W. DAINS
Last week at the Military Hospital, Randwick, the Rev. James W. Dains passed away after a long and wearing period of illness and weakness. He died as he lived, a brave and good Christian and minister of the gospel. His body was taken to Bowral for burial, and the friends who gathered in the church for the funeral service bore witness to the nobility and graciousness of his character and witness. To his daughter, Mrs.B. B. Kilby, and to his sons, Walter and Ronald, the first-named a prisoner of war in Japanese hands, and the other a Lieutenant in the Army, our hearts go out in tenderest sympathy.
