Millicent Meta (Maytie) McDonald was born on 20 April 1891 in Millicent, South Australia, to Robert McDonald (1850-1915) and his wife Ernestina Wilhelmina Zippel (1858-1934).
Maytie had been working as a nurse in St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for three years when she enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 28 November 1916 in Adelaide. She was 25 years old, five feet 63/4 inches in height, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and blonde hair (described in her attestation form as "yellow"). She specified her religious denomination as Presbyterian.
Maytie married Duncan Hart Miller (1884-1934) in Sydney in 1919. The couple had a son, Alexander Duncan Hart Miller (1919-1970).
