War Service/Promotions: Marched in to Larkhill, Wiltshire, England on 31 January 1917, 6th Training Battalion. Sick to Parkhouse Hospital, Larkhill, on 8 March 1917. He was marched in from hospital on 23 March 1917 to his unit. His unit proceeded overseas to Etaples, France from Folkestone, Kent, England, 9 May 1917. Taken on Strength into 22nd Battalion, 10th Brigade, on 14 May 1917. With unit in France until 3 January 1918, when he was admitted sick to 6th Field Ambulance. Rejoined 22nd Battalion on 9 January 1918. He was wounded in action (gassed) 23 July 1918, and admitted to 49th Casualty Clearing Station. Returned to duty 6 August 1918. On leave in England from 21 August 1918 till 8 September 1918. He was wounded in action (2nd occurrence) in the Field on 3 October 1918, with a gunshot wound to the right forearm, and admitted to the 5th General Hospital, Rouen, France on 5 October 1918. He was sent to Exeter, England, the next day, and admitted to the War Hospital on 7 October 1918. He was then transferred to No. 1 Base Hospital, Harefield, England, 7 December 1918. He was granted leave from 2 January to 16 January 1919, in England, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England, awaiting return to Australia.
Place of Wounding: (1) Gassed, 23 July 1918. (2) Gunshot wound, right arm, fractured ulna (wrist), 3 October 1918, France.

Fate: Returned invalided to Australia, per SS Gzaritza, on 15 March 1919, transferring to Dunluce Castle, 7 April 1919, at Alexandria, Egypt. He disembarked 15 May 1919. Alexander married Elizabeth Ewing Hungerford, 23 October 1920, John Knox Presbyterian Church, Swan Hill, Vic.
