Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

The local newspaper reported that Dan was employed in Mackay by his uncle, Mr W. Devine, of the Bowen Foundry, for some time and was a very promising young man, and quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant, being only 20 years of age. He had also worked for the newspaper for a time and was a very popular young lad.

According to his service file he was promoted to acting sergeant during July 1916, just prior to his death during the assault on Mouquet Farm by the 49th Battalion.

In his Red Cross wounded and missing file, it was stated by a mate who knew him very well, that he was shot and killed instantly, in the German trenches, when the witness was only a few yards away. He was in D Company.

His only brother 5710 Private John Michael Grey Pirie served with the 26th Battalion and returned to Australia during 1919.
