Thomas DARRIE was born in Scotland in 1883 to Anthony and Jane DARRIE (nee BAIN).
He arrived in Adelaide in 1914 having embarked from Liverpool in England.
Thomas joined the AIF on 6 March 1916 and was appointed to 'A' Company, 2nd Depot Battalion AIF at Mitcham, Adelaide. He was allocated service number 1653.
After some initial training, he embarked for overseas service aboard the HMAT AGO "Aeneas'' disembarking at Port Said on 25 April,1916. Six week later, he embarked for England and on 30 September,1916, was transferred to the 48th Infantry Battalion in Etaples, France.
On 18 February 1917, Private DARRIE was severely wounded In action sustaining a gunshot wound to his left leg causing a compound fracture. As a result, on 25 February 1917, he was transferred from the 12th Army Field Hospital at Rauen to England where he was admitted to the Southern General Hospital in Birmingham and was later transferred to the Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Waymouth.
He returned to Australia on the troopship Q38 'Ulysses' departing England on 14 September1917 and was officially discharged from the AIF on 23 November 1917.
After the war, Thomas DARRIE lived in both New Zealand and Australia.
