Joseph was the son of John Crawford Mansell and Leah George Mansell, of Mullumbimby, New South Wales.

His brother, 3418 Pte. Jacob Mansell 49th Battalion was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916, aged 32.

Joseph enlisted in the same battalion as his brother but was transferred to the 41st Battalion in England during 1916. He was seen to be badly wounded on the 12 August 1918 and was initially reported missing. He was then reported to have been buried in the field. His remains were located in 1919 and reinterred in the Heath Cemetery.
