Son of James Henry Hickey and  Elizabeth Mary Hickey nee Williams of 'Fernmount', of Bellinger River, NSW

Brother of John Edward Hickey who returned to Australia on 1 September 1919 having served with the 2nd Remount Unit and John Patrick Hickey who returned to Australia on 12 March 1919 having served with the Australia Naval & Military Expeditionary Force Medical Corps 

Commenced return to Australia on 31 October 1915 aboard HT Aenaes disembarking on 26 November 1915
