Full name was Kristian Quirinus Vaupel Jørgensen, but he enlisted as Christian Jorgensen. Christian was born in Denmark in 1895 and came to Queensland with his family in 1899 when he was about three years of age. His mum and dad settled at a little area called Dulong, near Nambour, Queensland.
His father, Hans Otto Vaupell Jorgensen, enlisted at 48 years of age, about five months after his son, and served in the same 49th Battalion.
Another younger brother, John ‘Jack’ Hans Jorgensen enlisted in the 42nd Battalion AIF in December 1915.
Christian Jorgensen was known as ‘Christie’ to his family and friends. He joined the 49th Battalion at the front in February 1917. His father was with him at the time, but only lasted a few months before he evacuated sick to England and soon after returned to Australia, due to ‘senility and debility’.
Christian served continuously on the Western Front until he was reported killed in action at Dernancourt on 5 April 1918. According to his Red Cross wounded and missing file, Jorgensen was seen to be killed by machine gun fire when the 49th Battalion was making an advance to push back German troops who had broken through the Australian front lines earlier in the morning.
His brother, John Hans Jorgensen was in England and made several enquiries of the Red Cross in regards to his brother. His place of burial was lost was lost after the war.
