Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Leonard Dimmick also served in the South African (Boer) War- Private S.N. 263, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.

When he enlisted in 1901 and his details were published with the 5th QIB rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. Dimmick, Mount Morgan. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 110, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Dimmick, Shandon Hill, Mount Morgan.

Leonard James Dimmick was born in Mar 1879 at Ryde on the Isle of Wight, England, a son to William Dimmick and Annie Dimmick (nee James). His parents married on the Isle of Wight in Dec 1874. The family relocated to Queensland, Australia, sometime prior to 1901 when Leonard enlisted in Queensland for the Boer War while they were residing at Mount Morgan.

Leonard married Gladys Jackson on 3 Dec 1904 in Queensland and they had 4 children, with a daughter not surviving childbirth. His wife Gladys died on 26 Jul 1913.

When he enlisted for WW1 at Mount Morgan, Queensland, on 20 Aug 1914 he noted on his Attestation Form that; he was a miner at Mount Morgan; he was a widower with 3 children; his N.O.K. was his father W. Dimmick, Shandon Hill, Mount Morgan (later moving to Windsor, Brisbane); and that he had previously served with the 5th QIB in South Africa.

While he was serving during WW1 in Egypt he collected curios which he sent back to his father, who subsequently donated them to the Queensland Museum. He died of illness (dysentry) while on active service in Egypt on 3 Mar 1916.
