55 years ago today, on the 6th September 1966, Private George William Charlton, 35th Battalion (Reg No-741), miner from Barton Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 74. ANGLICAN 2-115. 33.

Born at Tighes Hill, New South Wales on the 19th December 1891 to William Edward and Catherine Verbena or Verbine Charlton; husband of Gladys Maud Charlton nee Saalfeld (married 1919, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1967), George enlisted November 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.7.1917 (not stated), 25.9.1917 (synovitis right knee), 19.7.1918 (scabies), 14.8.1918 (ulcers).
Invalided to England 15.11.1917 (diphtheria).
Wounded in action 4.4.1918 (GSW finger, fractured, mild).

George was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 16th March 1919.

Mr. Charlton’s name has not been inscribed on the Kurri Kurri War Memorial or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at George’s gravesite to honour his service for God, King and Country.

Younger brother Frank (born 1895, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., enlisted 29.11.1915, West Maitland, N.S.W. with the 35th Battalion, Reg No-N11852, died 1947, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W.) was discharged as unlikely to become an efficient soldier on the 9.6.1916.
