Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Late John McRea
A correspondent writes: There passed away on the 9th June at the Military Base Hospital, Horsham (Vic.), an old Scottsdale identity, John McCrea. Familiarly known as 'Canary Jack,' he worked for many years for the late Thos. Hardman, 'Morningside,' and then for G. W. Burrows, 'Blackwood Park,' from where he enlisted in the Great War. His age was much against him, but after many tries he got away in the Remount department. He was invalided home in 1917, and has been more or less an invalid ever since. He had also served in the South African war with the Tasmanian Contingent. The late Mr. McCrea was given a military funeral at Horsham. He was 76 years of age, and a native of Kerang (Victoria), but came to Tasmania about 40 years ago, with a Welsh cob pony, named Canary, hence the nickname.
