Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

Woolstan James Govan, son of Mr. W. J. Govan, of 3 Muir-street, West Richmond, was born on the 28th of April, 1893, at Drouin, Gippsland, and attended the local State school.

He was a student at the Melbourne High School in 1908 and 1909. The following year, he was appointed junior teacher at School 1924, Drouin, and, later, at School 484, Coburg. He held the position of head teacher at School 3485, Kinnabulla, in 1913; and School 2257, Mangalore, in 1914. His official record shows him to have been a very promising young teacher, of sound capacity, using brisk and intelligent methods, and, personally, full of force and animation.

He enlisted on the 30th of December, 1914, and embarked as a Sergeant with the 13th Light Horse Regiment. After training in Egypt, he proceeded with his unit to Gallipoli on the 4th of September, 1915. A week before the evacuation, he was invalided back to Egypt. On the 23rd of March, 1916, he went with his unit to France, but died of heart failure on the 2nd of April.
