DEATH OF BOER
WAR VETERAN
Brisbane veteran of the South African War and World War I, Major Frederick James Hockey, of Oxford Street. Hamilton, died today. His funeral will leave St. Augustine's Church of England, Hamilton, for the Mt. Thompson Crematorium after a service starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Frederick James Hockey served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1.First service was as a Sergeant S.N. 28, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Regimental Sergeant-Major rising to Hon. Major S.N. 39, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1.
His WW1 service records held by National Archives indicates he was serving with the Qld Mounted Infantry in the Qld Defence Force prior to enlisting for the Boer War.
When he first enlisted in 1899 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Sergeant F. J. Hockey, married, Eagle Farm. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901. After discharge it appears he remained with the Qld Defence Force and was part of the Queensland representatives in the Coronation Contingent to attend the coronation celebrations of King Edward VII in 1902 in London.
In 1914 he enlisted again for WW1. His service record Attestation Paper, dated 24 August 1914, noted that; he was born at Swindon, Wiltshire, England, and was 44 years 1 month of age; he was married and a ganger; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Rose Hockey, Oxford St., Hamilton; and he had served 19 years with the 2nd Light Horse (including active service with the 1st QMI in South Africa). He embarked with the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major from Brisbane on 24 Sep 1914 aboard HMAT Star Of England and then proceeded to Gallipoli in May 1915.
His promotions during his service at Gallipoli and in the Egyptian Campaign included Lieutenant in Mar 1916, Quartermaster and Hon. Captain in Aug 1916; and Quartermaster and Hon. Major in Jul 1917. Due to illness, he was returned to Australia in late 1917 and discharged in Australia in Jan 1918. His Military Officer's Record held by National Archives shows his date of birth as 24 Jul 1874 which appears to be incorrectly recorded in terms of the year given his age stated on his WW1 Attestation Paper.
Frederick James Hockey was born in 1870 at Swindon, Wiltshire, England, a son to Fred Hockey and Mary Ann Hockey (nee Jones). He emigrated to Australia with his parents and siblings with his father settling the family on a dairy farm "Rosedale Dairy", Schneider Rd, Eagle Farm, Brisbane.
When Frederick enlisted in 1899 for the Boer War and his details were published in The Brisbane Courier it noted his address as Eagle Farm, likely his father's dairy farm, and that he was married which appears incorrect. He married Rosetta Bell Smith on 20 Mar 1901 in Queensland and they had 3 children.
